INTRODUCING GEMMA | Darrin Henry
Lights, make-up and high heels – it’s model photo shoot time. The buzz of anticipation when working with a beautiful new model is one of my favourite moments in photography.
St Helenian girl, Gemma Lawrence, is about to do her very first model photo shoot.

Finding Inspiration for First Model Photo Shoot
On St Helena there’s a distinct lack of visual fashion marketing that most people are exposed to elsewhere in the big world. Racks of glossy fashion magazines in shops or giant billboards with pouting supermodels are non-existent; there’s no fashion TV channel or window displays of mannequins draped in the latest trends. Even our Miss St Helena beauty pageant is a biennial event.
So inspiration for a young lady on her very first model photo shoot on St Helena can sometimes be a challenge.
But it can also be an advantage. A first time model who brings little more than enthusiasm to the shoot also has the ability to dazzle with a fresh ‘newness’ when they gaze into the camera lens.
This is going to be a ‘test shoot’ with Gemma, which will hopefully be the first of many. The studio always gives us much more control than working on location and is therefore preferable for photographing a new model.
An hour after arriving, Gemma is ready to shoot. Sharon has worked her make-up artist magic, the first outfit looks great and after a quick lighting check, we begin.

Two hours later the shoot is wrapped, Gemma was brilliant; a natural in front of the camera. Here is a selection of the images we shot on her very first model photo shoot.
