The well trodden cattle pathways in the fields are highlighted by the late afternoon shadows. These are the fields below the Dungeon Cemetery.
BEAUTIFUL ST HELENA IN PICTURES
Happy St Helena Day 2016 everyone! So much has happened since our St Helena Day Picture Special last year (2015) – the first flights have landed at the brand new airport, the island’s first female governor has arrived and Kimley Yon has just become the new Miss St Helena.
We have also released our second ‘Breeze’ e-magazine. Another 66 page publication, full of photo-stories from both St Helena and from guest photographers/writers around the world. Breeze is free to all subscribers of our blog.
Even though this is only What The Saints Did Next’s second year, it feels like tradition already that we should do another picture post to celebrate St Helena Day, 21 May. This year, 2016, we have put together a collection of 16 images from this beautiful island that Portuguese sailer João da Nova was the first to stumble across on this day in 1502.
We hope you enjoy our Sweet 16 collection of this place we call home.

The New Apostolic Church in Half Tree Hollow catches a spotlight of sunshine while dark storm clouds gather around the rest of the island.

George Island in the bay of Sharks Valley, with the backdrop of King & Queen Rock and Prosperous Bay Plain House in the far distance. A good example here of St Helena’s rugged coastline.

The central green heartland of St Helena is simply gorgeous during the summer months. On days like this it’s hard not to take a good picture!

The public benches in Castle Gardens, Jamestown, are very popular for people to relax and cool off from the midday heat. It’s a very peaceful spot in the middle of the ‘city’ maelstrom 🙂

The RMS St Helena says her final goodbyes to the island this year as she gives way to air access. For 26 years the vessel has been a constant and reassuring sight in Jamestown harbour, it will be strange and sad not to see the ‘old girl’ anymore.

Just to show it’s not always sunny with blue skies on St Helena! A wet and dreary day at The Briars junction with the low cloud cover over St Pauls in the background.

Early morning sunshine falling on St Matthew’s Church at Hutts Gate. Taken at 6.52am, this was quite a calm morning. This part of the island can be rather breezy in the morning with wind sweeping across from Alarm Hill and down off the central peaks.

The 699 steps of Jacob’s Ladder is not to be undertaken lightly, but if you do, take a camera for the superb angles of Jamestown below which change with every step.

Sunsets from the Half Tree Hollow area are normally quite spectacular on St Helena. Here the dark Atlantic Ocean calmly retrieves the sun from another day, watched over by one of the guns at Ladder Hill.

One of our favourite places to stop and photograph the flowers is St Matthew’s Church at Hutts Gate. Late afternoon light streaming into the church yard can be spectacular as this picture shows.

Ahh St. Helena. We were so fortunate to visit this beautiful island in Nov/Dec of last year via the RMS. Love your blog and truly enjoyed our voyage and stay on the island, sadly, it was much too short….
