Five days at sea surrounded by endless ocean could in some ways be a photographic nightmare. But, travelling and taking photographs of the RMS St Helena there’s plenty of reasons to keep the camera near. The ship, well, she’s a poser!
We have posted already about a recent voyage on the RMS which you can read here, as well as the Top Ten Highlights of RMS St Helena, Part 1 and Part 2. Do check them out when you have a moment.

7 The toys in the children’s playroom has changed a lot since the early days of the ship, but the room remains as popular as ever. This was a quiet moment, very early, before the kids were out of bed.

Looking at the photo of Freddie (before reading the text below) I knew it is YOUNG FRED, with the tray in his hand. He is the longest serving member of crew of the RMS St Helena. Frederick Alexander Green (a.k.a. Young Fred because he looks young, regardless of his age) boarded the old RMS St Helena (in England) in 1978, even before the ship was re-named St Helena from her original name Northland Prince. Young Fred was also one of the Saints who volunteered for the Falklands conflict engagement of the old RMS back in 1982. And he served on the CENTAUR as well. And was on duty when the old RMS made her farewell voyage. So, he’s doubtless the RMS’ GRAND Seigneur. Let’s hope and pray that he will be able to enjoy his retirement to the full on his (still) lovely Island of St Helena.

Shame, the RMS is going to be missed so much by so many people when it goes off line. It will be a very sad day.

Oh dear! I miss it so so much! It was literally the most wonderful experience of my life. My husband and I traveled to St Helena in 2004 after we were gifted a windfall. We were young and it was my first time leaving South Africa. I was almost overwhelmed with the wonderfulness of it.
I actually had a lesson to lay down memory effectively before we left. I can smell and sense every part of the ship if I close my eyes. I can hear the cows chew like we did on a quiet day driving across the island. And hear the “peak hour” traffic going up the hill out of St James’ Town in the early morning.
We rented a little house from Audrey Constantine and I go into that lovely little garden in my mind when the world becomes too much. One day, I hope with all my heart, I will be able to return – even by plane.

I love your blog and the photography is great but on RMS last year I found seabirds galore to photograph. My FB profile picture was taken from the rear of the ship. Keep up the good work!
