Comair flights between St Helena and Johannesburg will all be flown during daytime, so this will be a typical view out the window, minus the Gulf Air logo, of course! Flight times to St Helena will be 5 hours but because of the wind direction the return to Jo’burg will only take 4 hours.
British Airways operated, Comair to St Helena ticket prices for a return trip from Johannesburg “will start from £583” – it’s official!
The long awaited figure was finally released today (12 April, 2016) in a statement titled, ‘British Airways (Operated by Comair) Ready To Serve The Saints.’
My initial reaction is one of relief; it is within the price range long discussed and now people can plan.
What The Comair St Helena Ticket Prices Mean | Darrin Henry

This is us preparing to check in for a flight in Southeast Asia during What The Saints Did Next’s travels last year.
According to information published by the St Helena Access Office in March 2015, for St Helena’s Comair flights, the Traveller (economy) Class baggage allowance is 1 bag up to 23kg. Club or business class has an allowance of 2 bags up to 23kg each.
Airport on St Helena Getting All The Attention
The wording on the official release regarding cost of flights to St Helena, however, worries me a bit: “will start from £583” suggests there is more to it; let’s hope we’re not swapping the scramble for a handful of lower priced C Deck budget cabins on the RMS St Helena with a similar battle for limited numbers of airplane seats sold on tiered costs.
For now, let’s continue with the ‘happy vibe’ that hit me when I first saw the press release!
The £583 price is for Traveller (economy) class, all inclusive. Presumably this covers airport fees and taxes.
A business or club class seat is also an option, also worded “from £943,” again all inclusive.
St Helena’s brand new airport really is getting all the attention recently what with the first jet plane landing on Sunday and, the recent announcement that Prince Edward will be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony next month, on 21 May.
Cost of Flights to St Helena – Is £583 Good?
Within hours of today’s announcement I’ve seen debate start over the cost – is it good?
Well for Sharon and me, if it is £583, we think it’s a good price and here’s why:
We have a scrap of paper from September 2014 that is still under a magnet on our fridge – on it we wrote down RMS fares as they were quoted to us back then for a trip to Cape Town. The cheapest cabin available, five months in advance of February 2015, was £535 per person, one way. Return was double, at £1,070 per person.
Five days travel time, one way, plus the obligatory two days in Cape Town which we always factored in to allow for delays. A return trip to UK on the RMS via Cape Town therefore meant factoring two weeks travel time and there is still the cost of the return flight (CT to UK) to add.
Now, with air travel possible from St Helena, we will be able to take off from Prosperous Bay Plain at 12:30 on a Saturday, transfer in O.R. Tambo airport, Johannesburg five hours later and be in London at 06:55 the next morning. The return time-frame is similar, less than a day, and total cost could be around £1,100 depending how/when we book.

What The Saints Did Next flying Gulf Air last year, on a much larger plane than we’ll be seeing come to St Helena. This was an overnight flight but the flights in and out of St Helena will all be in daylight hours.
Flight Times: OR Tambo to St Helena
One-way travel times St Helena to London are being slashed from seven days to 18 hours. With the cost of flights to St Helena being announced it’s an exciting time for many, many people.
Next month when scheduled flights are expected to start, they will take place once a week on Saturdays. A Comair, Boeing 737-800 aircraft, will operate at these times:
Depart O.R. Tambo, Johannesburg (JNB) 08:30 local (GMT+2)
Arrive St Helena (HLE) 11:30 GMT
Depart St Helena (HLE) 12:30 GMT
Arrive Johannesburg (JNB) 18:30 (GMT+2)
Let’s Go See Spurs
It will soon be possible that we could be in Alarm Forest, St Helena at 10am on Saturday and at White Hart Lane, London by midday on Sunday to watch Tottenham in Premier League action! OK, we would need flight and match day tickets, but even so, that would have been impossible before. I’m just making the point. A similar one could be made for concerts or weddings or conferences etc.
I’m using London as an example but Johannesburg airport has flights scheduled to absolutely anywhere in the world!
That brand new way of life that has been coming for so long for Saints, is about to start!
Best Price Return: St Helena to London Heathrow
After the cost of flights to St Helena were announced I had a quick search on the Expedia travel website, which Sharon and I use extensively whenever we travel. Here are some interesting prices, for people on St Helena especially, wanting to take a holiday abroad.
I’ve picked random dates for a three week holiday to the UK. The St Helena to Johannesburg cost is fixed at £583, so really we’re looking at the flight options from Johannesburg. For instance:
3 Week trip to London, UK – LHR (London Heathrow)
Departing St Helena 4 June 2016
Potential lowest fare: £423.15 – Qatar Airways, 20:50 – 13:15 +1 day, 1 stop DOH (Doha)
Potential direct lowest fare: £564.35 – South African Airways, 20:25 – 06:55 +1 day
British Airways (BA): £590.65, 21:10 – 07:20 +1 day, direct flight
It means cheapest round-trip flight costs to UK from St Helena could range from about £1,000 to £1,150 in total.
These costs can easily go up (or down even) depending on how far in advance you book, the time of day you choose to fly and of course whether you fly direct or are willing to stop-over. We’ve found prices can also jump or drop significantly when we are able to alter departure or arrival by a day or two in either direction.
Flights back to St Helena will depart Johannesburg at 08:30 local time on Saturday mornings, which means if you are flying in from another country you must allow sufficient connection time. More than likely an overnight stay in Johannesburg for many people might work out as the safest option; after all, miss the St Helena flight and it’s a week before the next one!

Cost of flights to St Helena with Comair.
Currently, British Airways (operated by Comair) operates over 400 flights per week within southern Africa. Destinations include Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Harare, Livingstone, Victoria Falls, Windhoek and Mauritius.
In February 2016, the airline took delivery of a new Boeing 737-800 as part of the airline’s ongoing fleet upgrade, enabling it to operate South Africa’s most modern and efficient fleet.
Although we’ve made connections through O.R. Tambo, Johannesburg we’ve never stayed in the city itself so can’t comment on the hotel options, other than to say there seem to be quite a few available.
More Travel Options From Johannesburg
That’s travel to the UK, an obvious link for most people from St Helena, but in time many of us are going to start looking at the other options available to us from Johannesburg. Some of us have been looking already!
Here are some more interesting ideas after another quick search on Expedia for return flights from JNB to other destinations.

Something To Talk About On St Helena
International travel at this speed and at these prices is something the rest of the world takes for granted, but for Saints, it’s going to mean a whole new way of thinking. Yes, it’s still expensive, but overall, cost of flights to St Helena are going to be a lot more affordable for a lot more people.
Just going through the options listed above and realising what is possible, is very exciting.
Johannesburg as a city is still a worry for a lot of Saints concerned about the crime aspect that gets a lot of publicity. First hand word of mouth will be important here – once a few Saints have holidayed in Jo’burg and returned to pass on their experiences, confidence will change accordingly.
For certain, I know what the topic of conversation on the island is going to be for the coming weeks!
Important Note: The information I’ve given here is only a guide intended to give an overview of what travel expenses and options from St Helena could be like. Anyone intending to make payments for travel should confirm dates/times and other details with a reliable/qualified travel agent before parting with any money.
First jet plane to land on St Helena, 10 April 2016 – turning on the parking apron.

We are looking forward to seeing what all is included on the Comair flights to/from St Helena. This was the Gulf Air in-flight meal served on a long haul flight.

Cost of flights to St Helena – The Viewing Deck on the first floor of the brand new St Helena Airport is sure to be a popular place on flight days.

Kulula Airlines is one of SA’s leading low cost airlines based on Johannesburg. It is a wholly owned low-cost subsidiary of British Airways Franchisee Comair. We photographed this aircraft at Cape Town airport.

Queuing at a very crowded Don Muang airport in Bangkok, Thailand. The lesson here is don’t be late, leave plenty of time for airport delays such as long queues!

Sharon inside the huge, gleaming Hanoi international airport in Vietnam. Once the air route from St Helena to Johannesburg is established, Saints will have easy access to hundreds of destinations all around the world.
Descendants of St Helenians in Australia can’t wait. We already have Sydney to Johannesburg non stop with Qantas. We are excited at the prospect of the previously remote St Helena being only one transit stop from Sydney.
The Johannesburg link may or may not still be on – since wind shear was identified as a problem in April (’16) the original air service concept has been on hold as a solution is investigated. At this time no information available as to when any kind of decision on the way forward will be announced, we’re all waiting. The ‘Atlantic Star’ flight last month was the first proposal we (the public) saw that offered any type of solution https://whatthesaintsdidnext.com/2016/10/21/atlantic-star-lands-avro-rj100-on-st-helena/
Hopefully some information may come out soon so everyone can make plans. Be great to see visitors from Sydney arriving 🙂 Thanks for the comment. Cheers
Most enlightening views of this complex undertaking. Thanks to all who undertook the project.
Thank you for taking the time to record your adventure. You know what they say, it is not the destination, but the journey… Happy travels to you both!
Hopefully this journey to achieving air access from St Helena will be complete soon 🙂
Great article. Like you guys I love to travel and of all the places I have visited Saint Helena is one of my favourites. I have mixed views concerning the impact of the new airport I see however the opening for Saints to travel more which is a good thing. St Helena is simply a wonderful island.

Thanks for all the info ! Very enlightening.
I still prefer to cruise rather than fly but if it gets you there quicker I will do it! Well maybe one day😊
Reading all this info and looking at the pictures makes me proud to be a Saint. I daresay well done to everyone involved…..and a big high five to Darrin and Sharon. You are amazing , always keeping us up to date….what an inspiration !!
Thanks Denise, really appreciate your kind comment. The more we travel the more we are both proud to come from St Helena, it’s brilliant to be from such a unique place. Let’s hope the improved travel options (cost and speed) will allow more Saints to experience the wonderful benefits that comes with travel and exposure to other cultures, that in turn help us to appreciate our own home more. Cheers 🙂
Exciting!!!! Thanks for the very useful insight. My mom’s (Shirley Yon _ longwood) on the island and wonderful to know we can see her the same day compared to the 5days. Love yr blog. Glenda Esterhuizen
You’re welcome Glenda and thanks for the kind feedback. I know, that fast access time is going to be quite strange the first time we do it – 4 hours tarmac SHL to Jo’burg is going to be weird! The family connections now are going to be so, so much better. Cheers 🙂
What about flights from falklands I know we will be still using the mod flight to ascension what about cost from a ascension to St. Helena return
Good question Simon. Hopefully that info will be available soon, the Comair people are going to be on island next week. Otherwise a question for Access Office:
5/10/18 update: Access Office website no longer active so FAQ link removed from this reply. This subsequent blog of ours may help instead: https://whatthesaintsdidnext.com/ticket-prices-for-flights-to-st-helena-south-africa/
Useful research, thanks guys! 🙂
Time to start planning a trip Teeny! Cheers 🙂
Will not be on the first flight but all being well we
plan a family visit to St Helena next year. Patrick and Georgie Benjamin
Look forward to seeing you when you do Georgie, thanks for the comment. Cheers 🙂
Thanks for the valuable information I wonder who will surprise who and book the first seat from St Helena.
That first passenger list will have to go up in the museum 🙂 Cheers, thanks for the comment.
