St Helena Tour in Pictures
An unusual view of the turbines on Deadwood Plain through the long zoom, with the hulk of Longwood Barn rising up in the background.
A PHOTO TOUR FROM THE HARD DRIVE | Darrin Henry
Right place, right time, applies with photography a lot, especially when we’re out and about with the camera snapping St Helena pictures. We often end up capturing something unexpected and totally random, simply because we just happened to be there and the light was right.
We’ve been more active this year (2016) than normal, all because of Project 366, resulting in a hard drive full of weird and wonderful images from across the island.
“In no particular order…” as they say, here are 12 pictures of St Helena, a little quirky photographic tour around the island, just for fun.

Framed flowers – bougainvillea at the Castle in Jamestown.

They don’t make ’em like this anymore. Wooden window frames in a very old country house, still stylish even though they could do with a little paint.

You would think the circus trapeze safety net had been left out – not quite and not nearly as glamorous! This net covers the dump at Horse Point, designed to keep out the birds.

A few minutes after the rain, a February morning rainbow over the Jamestown anchorage. There were plenty of yachts on the moorings at that time as well.

St Helena Pictures – An Island Tour
Like matchboxes, Half Tree Hollow glows in the evening sunset, photographed from the top of High Knoll. In the distance the hillside fences above Jamestown are visible, as is the Mundens lookout station.

A view of the Jamestown court house from inside the St James Church clock tower.

Close up view of the glory bush flowers near Napoleon’s Tomb in Alarm Forest.

The thankless task of the lonely scarecrow. At least the view is good watching over crops in Longwood.

Classic Jamestown. Main Street buildings viewed from across Castle Gardens.

We shall call this the thorn tree haircut. A rather severe pruning job in Longwood.

Rusting cannons, abandoned at the bottom of the cliff below Mundens.
Lovely photos! Thank you for sharing. I shared with my dad who is St Helenian and not been back to the island in almost 60 years. He lived in Half Tree Hollow but when he lived there just one house on the whole mountain that they rented for 5 shillings a week! I can’t see the scarecrow shot it won’t load.., would you mind sending me a new link or emailing? I’d love to see. Thank you.
Gosh, very hard to imagine Half Tree Hollow with just the one house today!
Rent has also increased dramatically as well 🙂
Thanks for the comment Esther and alerting us to the scarecrow image issue. Not sure what caused it, but we’ve reloaded a new one which you should be able to see now.
Gorgeous photos as always, love the glory bush and lonely scarecrow…what an island
Thanks Di. Looking forward to seeing you back on the island one day (soon) 🙂
Great photos! It’s hard to encapsulate such a magical place in twelve photos, but nicely done. It makes us very nostalgic, since we were on the RMS back to Cape Town a year ago today. We very much enjoyed our 8 day visit and wish we could have spent more time on your lovely isle.
Thanks guys. Yes, you’re right, 12 photos is tough! The choosing has been going on for weeks can you believe. Think we’ll do more of these collections as there are so many great pictures hiding away on the drives! Thanks for the comment, bet you didn’t think a year ago the RMS would still be in service today? Cheers 🙂

Stunning – cannot wait to go and visit
Cheers Scumezza – hope you don’t have to wait too long for your visit.
Beautiful place, and I hear there are no snakes in Saint Helena. If that’s true, that would be paradise. I hate snakes.
You and Indiana Jones would love it here, Larry 🙂 No snakes. Cheers
