PRESENTS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS | Darrin Henry

Finding a present for photographers can be scary, for a few reasons – camera equipment is expensive, different brands aren’t always compatible and photographers tend to be fussy over what kit they need (or think they need).

But here are a few little gift ideas you could consider that won’t break the bank and most ‘snappers’ will appreciate.

Everything recommended below is equipment or accessories we already own and use so we have confidence in these suggestions. Each product is linked on Amazon which is where we shop ourselves. Prices and stock are accurate at time of writing this post, but things change, so check latest listings.

CamKix Professional Camera Cleaning kit – £12.49

Gift ideas for photographers - CamKix Professional Camera Cleaning kit contains 5 x microfiber cleaning cloths; 1 x air blower; 1 x booklet of 50 sheets of lens tissue; 1 x bottle alcohol free optical lens cleaning fluid; 1 x double sided lens cleaning pen; 1 x lens brush

Cleaning camera lenses is like washing your hands, it should be routine for keeping your expensive equipment healthy.

You can’t go wrong with the CamKix Professional Camera Cleaning kit; all photographers would find this useful, whether they use a compact, a GoPro or a DSLR with a bag full of lenses. This little package is brilliant. It includes the following:

5 x microfiber cleaning cloths

1 x air blower

1 x booklet of 50 sheets of lens tissue

1 x bottle alcohol free optical lens cleaning fluid

1 x double sided lens cleaning pen

1 x lens brush

I particularly like the powerful air blower in this kit, an upgrade from the little puffers of old. It is useful for removing particles of dust/dirt from the lens, camera or sensor, delivering a strong jet of clean air.

POD bean bag – £22.07

Another great photography gift idea, the Pod Bean Bag, that works on virtually all cameras.

Gift ideas for photographers - The Pod bean bag allows you to keep the camera steady on awkward surfaces. The standard 1/4" screw fits most cameras, big and small.

This is our own bean bag in the pictures, more than 10 years old now, but it is always, always in our camera backpack. We never leave home without it.

The standard 1/4” screw fits the tripod attachment under most cameras, from small compacts to large DSLRs and we use it equally on both. The Pod bean bag allows you to keep the camera steady on any surface and shoot with a slow shutter speed. Incredibly useful when you don’t have a tripod or not allowed to use one but you still need that camera really steady. Attach and perch the camera on all sorts of places; open car windows, tops of railings, fence posts, against lamp posts… endless possibilities. Honestly, this is such a superb little accessory for any photographer to have.

59ml Photographic Solutions Eclipse Lens and CCD Optic Cleaning Fluid – £15.98

We’ve been using this product for about five years now. It’s simply one of the highest quality lens cleaning fluids you can buy.

Photographic Solutions Eclipse Lens and CCD Optic Cleaning Fluid dries quickly leaving absolutely no residue.  It is also suitable for cleaning DSLR sensors if used with PEC PAD wipes, although this is not something you should attempt unless you’re confident you know what you’re doing.

Superfine Microfibre Lens Cleaning Cloths – £1.95

I’ve added these microfiber cloths as a little bonus item to go with the cleaning fluid above.

This little pack of 10 cleaning cloths is a great value maintenance accessory. Depending on what we’re up to we tend to use the same cloth for two or three months and then replace it for a new one. (The old cloth comes in handy as a general cleaning rag but no longer for lenses.)

The cloths can also be used for glasses, computer/laptop screens and the full range of mobile phones and devices.

Now two items that are aimed more at DSLR camera owners. When purchasing these items make sure you confirm and choose the version that works with your camera.

Neewer Camera Wired Timer Remote Control – £22.32

Gift ideas for photographers - Neewer Camera Wired Timer Remote Control.

This little gadget allows DSLR users to capture amazing time-lapse photographs or videos using still images. It came in very useful shooting the recent lightning storm on St Helena.

Basically you set the timer for the number of images you want to capture, set the required interval between each shot, press the start button and away you go.

Gift ideas for photographers - The Neewer Camera Wired Timer Remote Control can be used to create time-lapse photos like this, High Knoll fort on St Helena, which is Day 72's image for our 2016 Project 366.

Working in one second increments, delays, exposure times and intervals up to 99 hours, 59 mins, 59 secs can be easily set from the LCD menus. The control it offers is superb. A short cable connects to the camera. This Neewer model works with Canon EOS 7D, 5D Series, 1D 6D 50D 40D 30D 20D 10D.

There is a different Neewer Remote Control for Nikon cameras: D7100 D7000 D5300 D5100 D5000 D3300 D3200 D3100 D610 D600 D90 DF DSLR Cameras.

Check out our behind the scenes time-lapse video segment in Jodi Wade’s beauty shoot, which was created using the Neewer Remote Control. And remember, this was made from a sequence of still images.

Canon RC-06 Infra-red remote control – £16.99

Gift ideas for photographers - Canon RC-06 infra-red remote control. Very small and easy to use. The golf tees are for scale (they don't come with the remote).

I think of this as the DSLR equivalent of a selfie stick – only better! This tiny device allows you to set up your camera, get in position, then press the button to fire the camera when you’re ready. Sharon and I find this useful, especially photographing hiking blog posts, such as the Flagstaff Post Box Walk.

It’s also perfect for night photography and other tripod work when you don’t want to risk shaking the camera when pressing the shutter button – just use the remote.

It works with a whole series of Canon cameras; follow the link to see the full listing.

Nikon do a similar product, although we have no experience with this brand it seems to have good reviews.

Nikon ML-L3 Remote Control – £13.00

Gift ideas for photographers - The Canon RC-06 infra-red remote control is great for shooting hiking photo-stories, as we did here on the Flagstaff post box walk.
