Tribal Attraction – The Beauty Photoshoot
Celebrating International Day of Beauty | Sharon Henry
Most of us are wired to initially be attracted to the good looking; so much so, it sometimes lands us in trouble. Like those moments our attention is inadvertently diverted by the good looks of another – when it’s supposed to be otherwise undivided on our beloved. It’s human nature!
Not Making Excuses, But…
Today is International Beauty Day which has been established to embrace and appreciate just that; the ‘beauty that delivers aesthetic and moral pleasure.’ Set up by the International Committee of Aesthetics And Cosmetology (CIDESCO) in 1995, International Beauty Day is considered a holiday for those who work in the cosmetics and beauty industry.
Not that we need much of an excuse, but we decided to mark the day with a beauty photoshoot. Everyone has their own ideals of what constitutes beauty, and rightly so. However, I’m sure we’ll mutually agree that our eyes are naturally drawn to the ‘aesthetically pleasing.’ And, contrary to what some may say, ‘looks’ matter. Whether it’s buying fruit, clothes shopping or even enjoying scenery.
For our beauty photoshoot we chose a makeup look that’s a little bit ‘out there.’
Here’s a behind the scenes video of our beauty photoshoot with Jodi:
And who’d have thought that a pair of fishnet tights and a length of perforated tape could create such a mesmerising image? The fishnets were not worn conventionally, but used as a template to create a ‘mermaid’ makeup effect. The tape’s primary function is to hold file reinforcements, more at home in the office stationery cupboard than in my makeup kit. Being situated on remote St Helena improvisation becomes a necessity, and each item was essential in achieving this tribal makeup look on our model Jodi.
The Bank Robber Look
Jodi is a natural stunner; she can even carry off the bank robber look! To get the mermaid effect that enhances her cheekbones, the tights were pulled over her head. The area was dampened with a sponge and eye shadow applied which assumed the fishnet ‘scales’ pattern; any shift in the material would have spoilt the effect. Her cheeks were dusted with setting powder and the tights then carefully lifted off. This was repeated on Jodi’s arm and hand.
Everything Has Beauty
For the perfectly spaced dots, the perforated tape was made into a headband and secured tightly in place. An eyeliner pencil ‘coloured-in’ the holes, before applying eye shadow to get a richer hue. Viola! Fishnet tights and perforated tape as you’ve never seen ’em before!
Alas, we can’t all be head turners or look like Jodi, but beauty comes in many forms. My Mum used to say, ‘nobody made themselves, otherwise we’d all be perfect!’ True, in that case there’d be no wishes for smaller noses, bigger eyes or clearer skin and the world would be a lot less interesting. True beauty comes from being comfortable and confident with being ourselves. The Chinese philosopher, Confucius said, “Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it.” I think the key especially, is seeing the beauty within ourselves, the rest will follow.

Happy International Beauty Day everybody.
